The Pleasure Trap….Or, How to Break Your Bad Food Addiction

Have you ever heard of The Pleasure Trap? I hadn’t either until I saw this TED video by Douglas Lisle.

It’s excellent! He gives great information about how processed foods have interfered with the normal amount of happiness we derive from natural foods. It’s very similar to the effect found from drugs……yes, drugs.

The best way to break the cycle and reset your system is through fasting. This video was the tipping point in my decision to do a water fast and reset my own pallet.

Vegan Eating

I went completely vegan for two months… And loved it. Felt great… Lots of energy… Then weight on the scale was going the right direction.

Then, almost over the course of a single day it all stopped. I don’t know why…. Just boom… Done.

I want to bet back on the train. Maybe I should watch Forks Over Knives again.

Two Weeks Down..

Two weeks down in this new venture of walking to the gym by where I work…working out there and then going to work.

So far things are going really well!  The scale shows a weight loss of around 5 to six pounds and I feel great!  The exercise plus good diet is getting it done.

The only downside is being constrained by having to get to work and not having enough time for a thorough workout…I’m thinking of running here at the house and then walking to the gym to swim or lift weights. We’ll see, that would require waking up even earlier…always a tough call.

Still, things are good!  

An Update So Far

The point of this blog is to document how I am Turning This Life Around.  I wanted to concentrate on three areas:

  1. Finances
  2. Physical heath
  3. Diet

Here’s my ranking so far:

  1. Finances:   C-    We have made a budget. Sticking to it….not so much. Medical bills are throwing everything to the wind this month.  We still need to finish  baby step one and this will only be heled by sticking to or budget. Then the fun can begin with the debt snowball. 
  2. Physical heath: C-  I have been running…..periodically. I have been lifting….. periodically.  This will soon be much better as I will be running to and from work each day. Yes, running.  I’ll be forced into two a day workouts.  
  3. Diet: B+  Mostly healthy….with some cheating thrown in here and there. 

I need to keep telling myself…..Get your act together!
